I think the majority of people today don't think much about the never ending and boundless love that God has for His creation. Specifically His creation the human race. We are not the product of mindless, random chance but are the intentional, purposeful creation of God Himself. We are as the bible teaches created in the image of God. Therefore, Gods love for us is very real and is expressed to us in a myriad of ways each day. But I think one of the most illustrative examples of the love of God for us is in the examples in the bible where God reaches out and restores the wayward person. Perhaps the most well know is the story of the prodigal son. Here a son insults his father by asking for his inheritance early, and takes it and goes into a far country and squanders it all in a careless and sinful lifestyle. He spends it all and in due time has nothing left and hits rock bottom. As he wastes away literally in a pig sty he realizes the foolishness and wrongfulness of his actions and decides to return home to his father. He plans what he will say and is prepared to be like a hired man, rather than a son, if that's what it will take to make things right.
As he nears the house, his father is there, looking for him, waiting for him and when he sees him from a great distance, he gathers up his long cloak and runs in a most undignified way for that culture and time, to greet and receive his foolish and wayward son. Before his son can finish his planned out speech of repentance, his father orders a celebration and gathers everyone together to rejoice that he is safe and sound and back home where he belongs. Now, that's love. It is unconditional, non judgmental, freely given and undeserved love. The story is an example of what Jesus tells us the love of God is like to us. We have squandered our lives apart from God, and have lived in such a way that is foolish and insulting to what God has for us. Yet, His love is expressed to us in the coming of Jesus Christ and His offer of salvation. Through faith in Him and His death and resurrection, we can be restored to where we belong which is in relationship to God our Creator. Because He paid the penalty for all our wrongs, we receive the unconditional, non judgmental, freely given and undeserved love of God. He even gives us the ability to be truly repentant, that is to be sorry for our sin and willing and able to turn from them and start brand new. When He tells us to "...go and sin no more,' we are able to do it.
So I hope this finds you in good standing with God through faith in Jesus, but if not please consider what is written here. Ask Christ to forgive you, to restore you and give you a fresh start. Millions have done just that before us, and the same love they have experienced, you and I can experience as well. May God help us to do it!
